Zoe Speaks consists of Kentuckians Mitch Barrett, Carla Gover, and Owen Reynolds, (and for larger shows, fiddler/vocalist Zoey Barrett and multi-instrumentalist Arlo Barnette) who draw on their deep roots in the region to put their own spin on everything from traditional ballads to finely-crafted originals. A smooth, mellow instrumental mix lays the background for the close vocal harmonies that are a defining feature of their sound. A veritable songwriting powerhouse, their awards include songwriting wins at Telluride Bluegrass Fest, Merlefest, Rocky Mountain Folks Fest, and Kerrville Folk Fest, among others. A staple on the Kentucky music scene for over a decade with three successful CDs under their belt, they are back together and set to release a new album this summer. They accompany themselves on guitar, claw hammer banjo, upright bass, and sometimes dulcimer and clogging feet.

Sold-Out Show in Berea!

We had a great time picking for friends and fans in Berea, KY, hosted by our good pal Sune Fredericksen at the Berea Community Arts Center! Zoey and Arlo joined us for some righteous harmonies, fiddling, and guitar-picking! Yee-ha!

Music at Al's!

We had a big time in spite of the UK loss which meant that we didn't advance to the Final Four! (Yeah, Kentuckians love their basketball!) Here's a nice shot of Zoey and Arlo warming up the crowd!

20th Anniversary!

2016 marks the 20th anniversary of our first project together (before we came up with the name Zoe Speaks!) Come on out to Molly Malone's in Covington Sunday to celebrate with us! It's a great pub and listening room that makes a perfect road trip!

Pickin' with Brett & Jesse

In addition to scheming about the new Zoe Speaks album, Owen and Carla are currently helping out another great Kentucky balladeer and banjoist, Brett Ratliff. Yesterday all worked on some new old songs in Carla's living room in preparation for his new project entitled "Gone Boy."

Rainy Night at The New Vintage

Although it was a very rainy night AND there was a UK game going on, we had a lovely crowd for our first show at The New Vintage. We were joined by Zoey Raven on fiddles and vocals and guitar, as well as some tasty lead playing by Arlo Barnette. Look for us in Louisville again this summer!

Kentucky Coffee Tree

We felt SO welcome and there was so much love at our most recent show in Frankfort. Thanks to all our friends who came out, Walt and Mary for hosting, and Fred Keams for adding his amazing flute sounds!

A Kentucky Christmas...

We had fun playing at the Henry Clay Estate today in Lexington, after a brief run-through at Carla's house. The event was called "A Kentucky Christmas." If you missed it, you can still come and see us before Christmas in Frankfort on December 12th at the Kentucky Coffee Tree Cafe. Bring your friends and family, and we'll bring the yee-ha!
